James R. Smith, PhD (he/him)

I work with adults of all ages, from students to senior citizens. Prior to becoming a clinical psychologist, I worked in construction and as a teacher and community college administrator in Appalachia.

I received my Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Education degree from the University of Virginia. My PhD in Clinical Psychology is from the University of Illinois. I did my internship at the Boston Veteran’s Administration Medical Center and at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. I worked in a variety of outpatient and inpatient settings prior to joining Christie Clinic’s Department of Psychiatry in 1990. Three colleagues from Christie Clinic founded Birch Tree Counseling & Consulting LLC in 2003.

I am licensed as a clinical psychologist in Illinois.
